specimen-on-demand

An experimental Type Specimen that explores Sporting Grotesque using  Ulises Carrión’s text, “THE NEW ART OF MAKING BOOKS”.

Within this project, I demonstrate the playful nature of Sporting Grotesque through its scale / legibility and its relationship with the body text.

In his work, Carrión highlights how designers’ relationship with books must evolve with our use of them, from ‘containers of a text’ to ‘books as objects’ in their own right. On the chapter pages, I have demonstrated the decorative qualities of Sporting Grotesque by using the characters instead of images to add interest to spreads.

As Sporting Grotesque is not know for being legible in small formats, I have tried to play on this by shrinking it down to the extent that it is illegible to the naked eye, forcing the viewers focus on its form rather than the body text.

show offf!

Exhibition posters for Show Offf! 2017- a joint type & print exhibition by 1st, 2nd and 3rd year BA Graphic Design students @ Ravensbourne University.

The posters were created in collaboration with Veronika Valtonen using modular typefaces created by 1st year students.

These posters were designed to work as A2 posters displaying the variety of typefaces or as A6 postcards that showcase individual examples of the modular letters.

wasting time

Within this project my aim was to somehow celebrate the concept of ‘wasted time’. I have been focusing on the ways in which creatives would consider their time ‘wasted’ through print. The best representation of this I have found has been collecting others ‘misprints’ and displaying them in a way which celebrates their imperfections and challenges their uselessness.

100gsm Heritage White // printed on laser-jet // perfect bound using the ‘fan’ binding technique

The images have been printed inside the French fold in order to challenge their visibility.

This book subtly showcases a collection of misprints I found abandoned by printers - varying from formal documents to creative test-prints.
