An experimental Type Specimen that explores Sporting Grotesque using Ulises Carrión’s text, “THE NEW ART OF MAKING BOOKS”.
Within this project, I demonstrate the playful nature of Sporting Grotesque through its scale / legibility and its relationship with the body text.
In his work, Carrión highlights how designers’ relationship with books must evolve with our use of them, from ‘containers of a text’ to ‘books as objects’ in their own right. On the chapter pages, I have demonstrated the decorative qualities of Sporting Grotesque by using the characters instead of images to add interest to spreads.
As Sporting Grotesque is not know for being legible in small formats, I have tried to play on this by shrinking it down to the extent that it is illegible to the naked eye, forcing the viewers focus on its form rather than the body text.
